Jazz Funk & Commercial Dance Classes in Kitchener

Jazz technique, hip-hop energy, and the polish of music-video choreography, all in one class.

Who jazz funk classes are for

Dancers with some experience

This class moves at a moderate pace and assumes you can pick up a combination without a full walkthrough. If you're brand new to dance, our beginner drop-ins are a better starting point.

Music video lovers

If you watch a music video and want to move like that, jazz funk is where the technique lives. Expect sharp lines, performance energy, and choreography built to be watched.

Dancers cross-training

Hip-hop, contemporary, and heels dancers often add jazz funk to sharpen their technique, musicality, and stage presence across every style they train in.

Performance-minded students

If you want to feel like you're rehearsing for a stage or a video shoot, this class delivers that energy every week.

What to expect in a jazz funk class

Jazz funk at Kollective blends jazz technique with the energy of hip-hop and the polish of commercial choreography. If you love music video dance, performance energy, and crowd-pleasing style, this is your class.

Classes open with a technique-focused warm-up, then move into choreography broken down section by section until the whole room can perform it with intention instead of just getting through the steps. Expect sharp isolations, level changes, and a performance quality throughout.

This class is best suited to dancers who already have some movement background. If you've never danced before, start with a beginner drop-in first and come back to jazz funk once you're comfortable following choreography.

What students say

The first thing I noticed about classes at Kollective was how welcoming of an atmosphere Kezea created. At my previous dance studios it felt like nobody really cared, but at Kollective if I'm not there people will notice (in a good way!). It's a wonderful safe space from all the toxicity and competition often found in other studios.

Kezea is one of the most creative, patient, and dedicated people I’ve ever met. Her passion for dance is absolutely contagious, and her teaching style strikes the perfect balance between challenging and fun. She has an incredible gift for pushing you out of your comfort zone while still building on your pre-existing strengths. Every class with her will challenge you in the best way possible. Even after moving an hour away, I still made the trip to attend her classes — I simply couldn’t get enough.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience?
Jazz funk classes are not aimed at total beginners. You should be comfortable following choreography at a moderate pace. If you've never danced before, start with a beginner drop-in first and come try jazz funk once you're comfortable picking up combinations.
What is jazz funk, exactly?
Jazz funk blends jazz technique with hip-hop energy and the polish of commercial choreography, the kind of dance you see in music videos and live performances. It's sharp, stylized, and built for performance.
Is this the same as commercial dance?
Yes, we use the terms together. Commercial dance is the umbrella style you see in music videos and on stage, and jazz funk is the technical foundation underneath it.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing you can move freely in and sneakers with good grip. Some students like fitted layers so the instructor can see body lines during combinations.
How big are the classes?
Small, typically 8 to 14 students. Enough energy in the room for performance-style choreography, small enough that you still get individual feedback.
Where is Kollective Studios?
259 King Street West, Unit 203, Kitchener, ON N2G 1B1, downtown Kitchener, second floor above King Street.
